Discovered as a hand-painted artwork in the Liberty archive, this majestic botanical was reinterpreted as a delicately embroidered tapestry. Its ornamental ogee trail follows a characteristic Arts & Crafts mirrored repeat, adorned with a plethora of stylised roses, sunflowers, daisies, lilies, and honeysuckle.

About the Collection:

The William Morris Gallery is the largest public collection of Morris’ work in the world. Founded in 1950, the award-winning museum space welcomes over 180,000 visitors a year to the permanent and temporary exhibitions. The gallery explores topics relation to Morris and his significant impact on the fields of art and design, environmental sustainability, and democratic access to the arts.

May Morris, the younger daughter of William Morris and Jane Burden, grew up steeped in the ethos of the Arts & Crafts movement. Born in 1852, May Morris was a pioneer of art embroidery, leading the revival of this art form in the world of craft. Inspired by medieval artifacts and the natural world, alongside managing the Morris & Co. embroidery business for over a decade, she created enticing wallpaper prints and intricate jewellery designs.

As part of Liberty’s ongoing creative partnership with the William Morris Gallery, the Craft Garden collection honours the style and legacy of May Morris. In celebration of Morris’ creativity and her pioneering social status as a working female professional, this fabric series sheds a new light on her influence. Drawing on original embroideries and artworks discovered within the William Morris Gallery archives, Craft Garden also highlights the significance of the Arts & Crafts style within Liberty’s rich heritage.

The Craft Garden collection whisks us back to the early 1900s, celebrating the remarkable artistry of designer, May Morris, daughter of the legendary William Morris. Inspired by her creative charisma and technical prowess, these poetic patterns capture the essence of the Arts & Crafts movement through her meticulously detailed embroideries. The designs, imbued with a sense of symmetry, movement, and flow, reflect the style that played a pivotal role in defining Liberty’s early history and securing its place as one of the design house’s most iconic design pillars.
